Eating Food That’s Better for You, Organic or Not

While we support organic living and eating, in an article written by Mark Bittman, he talks about eating food that’s better for you in general. While organic food demands are on the rise, there’s no doubt that they can be more expensive. For some families this is not an option. Bittman explains that by choosing food with real ingredients, whether they are organic or not, we may be able to take the first step to a healthier lifestyle.

Bittman points out that Americans eat so badly, a majority get 7 percent of their calories from soft drinks, more than they do from vegetables; the top food group by caloric intake is “sweets”; and one-third of nation’s adults are now obese – that the organic question is a secondary one. He suggests that a person’s health as well as the environment will improve with a simple shift in eating habits away from animal products and highly processed foods to plant products and what might be called “real food.”

When reading Bittman’s article, it seems to be a well laid out thought process. While some foods we eat may still be organic, and that is great, it may be more important to pay attention to what we eat and making sure real ingredients fills our diets.
